Starving in Front of a Bowl of Kibble

My cat wasn’t satisfied to eat kibble out of his bowl that had been sitting there all day. He wanted to see me personally pour it out fresh from the bag each time. But what can you expect from a cat with a name like King? Many times after hearing his pitiful meowing thinking he had nothing to eat I’ve followed him as he lead the way to his bowl just to find he still had food, but he wanted to see me pour cat food out of the bag before eating. Despite pointing to the food right in front of him he’d just look back at me with his cute eyes waiting to be fed, or more accurately to see me give him more kibble although he already had some-because he wouldn’t accept what was in front of him.

You would think that as particular as he was about fresh food he would at least hold the kind of water he would drink to the same high standard but he didn’t. Instead of drinking water from his water bowl he often choose to drink filthy water that collected in plant pots outside or out of the bathtub as if he had no better options for some strange reason. I thought this cat was strange, yet I wonder how many times I have acted the same. “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:13.

As frustrating as this cat has been it is nothing compared to what I’ve done to God. I’ve cried like I was dying and had no better options than filth to satisfy my emotional thirst when the water of a pure life and bread of God’s truth was right in front of me. I have also turned aside from the living water of God to drink filth elsewhere. I have been spiritually hungry neglected reading the Torah and tried to fill my life with other things when God already gave me the bread of his words.

It is very easy to spend your life stressed out about life and cry to God about it instead of just accepting the things that God has already promised you. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that God is our provider. The cat’s behavior wasn’t all bad, he would cry to me to reaffirm the fact that there was no reason for him to lack. When we are blind to what God was already given us in the Bible we shouldn’t just sit there, we should pray until we can see what God has provided for us. “When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.” Psalm 94:19
