Hezekiah's Tunnel

In this video you can learn about Hezekiah's Tunnel. This was a great undertaking that required a lot of wisdom and effort. I won’t give too much of the video away but watching it really helps you to get a better understanding of just how impressive it is and why it was considered so important.

This ancient project that we can still see evidence of today is mentioned in the Bible, “Isn’t everything else about Hezekiah, all his heroic acts and how he made the pool and tunnel to bring water into the city, written in the official records of the kings of Judah?” 2 Kings 20:20

Finding evidence for this can help increase our confidence that what we read in the Bible is inspired by events that actually took place in the past. But there are other lessons we can learn as well. Although Hezekiah officially gets the credit for the tunnel he clearly didn’t do all the work alone while focusing on other duties as king. Great works often require great amounts of cooperation. What if some of the workers were like “yeah, this project might help protect the city but I won’t help at all because somebody else will get credit?” What if people did a really poor job?

When it comes to great accomplishments in a society one thing we can credit is having a sense of humility, because you need to be able to acknowledge the limits of your own qualifications to know when to lean on the expertise of someone else and be willing to help others without focusing solely on yourself. Even kings in the Bible had advisors they could seek counsel from. Just because someone is a great builder or digger doesn’t mean they are the best at coming up
with ideas, and just because someone is great at thinking up ideas that doesn’t always mean they are also the best leader to motivate people to get things done. We each have our own talents and society and organizations tend to crumble when we are too full of ourselves to learn from each other’s strengths or help each other accomplish goals that are in our collective best interest and only think of ourselves and how much attention we will individually get for things.
