Death by Diet

Death by Diet

"No disease that can be treated by diet should be treated with any other means."
- Maimonides

Today's column marks two milestones.
First, it is one of my shortest.
Second, it is one of my best.

The March 7, 2017 issue of JAMA includes a study which assesses the ten factors primarily responsible for mortality from heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Researchers determined and concluded:

"There were ten primary factors related to the 318,645 (45.4%) cardiometabolic disease (CMD) deaths".

1) Excess sodium (9.5%)
2) Low intake of nuts & seeds (8.5%)
3) Higher intake of processed meats (8.2%)
4) Low omega-3 fats (7.8%)
5) Low vegetables (7.6%)
6) Low fruits (7.7%)
7) High sugar-sweetened beverages (7.4%)
8) Low whole grains (5.9%)
9) Low polyunsaturated fats (2.3%)
10) High unprocessed red meats (0.4%)

Do the math. Eliminate salt and soda and eats nuts, seeds, veggies and fruits and you cover almost 50% of your bases. In other words, become a SMART vegan.
