Jewish Guide to Shiva Practices

Jewish Guide to Shiva Practices

Shiva is a weeklong mourning period following the burial of an immediate relative in a Jewish family.  This video reviews the time when loss is recognized and comfort is offered.

Shiva is part of a period of mourning that is held in the family home or the home of a close relative.  Sometimes a kaddish or prayer that praises God is recited during Shiva.  The tradition is ancient and traces its roots to Biblical times.

The purpose of Shiva is to allow mourners the time they need to gradually return to the social world.  More than a ceremonial observance, it’s an opportunity for shared memory and kindness.
