Figuring Out God's Plan for Your Life

Figuring Out God's Plan for Your Life

One of the biggest concerns one could face is defining God’s will for your life. I have heard a lot of stories about people who studied this certain thing for years and then never really liked what they learned and found out something else was their calling.

I didn’t want to be one to waste years doing something I didn’t really want to do or something I did like but then have to leave everything behind when I learned I was really meant to do something else.

However, as the years went on I found that God could guide you without you even knowing it if you are willing to be led. “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:6. Acknowledging God in all our ways can include taking out the trash and washing the dishes. It is faithfulness in the little areas in life that qualifies us for bigger tasks. As Yeshua said, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities.” Luke 16:10

We need to keep in mind that we are serving the Lord in the big things as well as in the little areas of life. When we do this we can be less worried about whether or not we are meeting our purpose in life because as the wise Jewish king Solomon said, “That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

Even if you end up making some career or educational choices you later decide to leave behind and make some mistakes, that doesn’t mean serving God won’t be worth it and all those years doing other things were completely wasted. Moses gave up being a prince in Egypt, lived as a fugitive after killing someone, and ended up a shepherd. But it was after years of being a faithful shepherd that God made him a shepherd of Israel. Joseph was a slave but after being faithful in his duties he ended up being put in prison, yet still became next in power to the Pharaoh of Egypt. Samson did many things that soiled his life but he was still able to defeat more of God’s enemies during his death than in his life.

God can redeem the time that was spent away from God or doing something other than His plan for you. The Jewish prophet Joel wrote God’s promise, “’So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten... praise the name of the Lord your God, Who has dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to shame.’” Joel 2:25-26. Rabbi Paul once said “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 So if you are not sure what your calling is and are afraid you have made a mistake don’t worry. Pray for God’s guidance and just live up to the light that you do have and know that as long as you obey God you are in God’s will.
