God's Name

God's Name

What is God's name?  Some say it is so sacred that it cannot be said.  Some people say we must call him Jehovah; some say we must call Him Yahweh. But what does the Bible say?

When Adam talked with God He called Him Lord God, Adonoi Elohem.  When Moses met with God at the burning bush, God called Himself the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.   Moses asked God who He should say sent him.  God answered saying "tell them I AM sent you."

After Moses went to Egypt and spoke to Pharaoh, Pharaoh refused to let the people go and made their lives worse.  Moses prayed to God for guidance.  God said to Moses "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, El Shaddai, but by my name Jehovah, I was not known to them".  So Here in Exodus chapter 6 we see that God Himself is saying that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had never even known of the name Jehovah or Yahweh.  Certainly if this was the only name that God would have us use He would have told them.

As we continue in the Bible we see that God has many different names.  He is called the eternal God, the everlasting God, the most high God, the Holy God, the God of hosts, the living God, and the God of Israel.  In Exodus 34 we are told that Moses ascended up Mt Sinai.  The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there and proclaimed the name of the Lord.  And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord God, Merciful, and gracious, long-suffering and abounding in goodness and truth.

In Isaiah 9 we are told that unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulders.  And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of peace.  Another beautiful name that God is referfed to in the Hebrew scriptures is Savior, in Hebrew that is Yeshua.

In the bible God is called upon by many names.  The important thing is that we call upon Him in sincerity and truth.
