Within the Darkness

Within the Darkness

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.

And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.” Genesis 1:1-5

Does your life seem dark and pointless? It does not have to be. Just because life may seem void of hope and without form or purpose that doesn’t mean God cannot bring good out of it. Just like God created light in the darkness God can take a life that seems empty and meaningless and fill it with goodness. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 God is not limited to working during the happy sunny times of life, “The day is Yours, the night also is Yours; You have prepared the light and the sun.” Psalm 74:16

Darkness does not mean God’s absence or disinterest. Bible says, “The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad! Clouds and darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” Psalm 97:1-2 So rather than seeing the dark times in our lives as a sign of God’s abandonment we can know that in the darkness God is not idle, but working on our behalf. And it is often being in the darkness that brings us nearer to God. Although the Bible says, “For He does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.” Lamentations 3:33 we can also learn from experience, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes.” Psalm 119:71

Remember the same God that called the light day, called the darkness night and the same God that divided the light from the darkness was hovering over the face of the deep. Please understand that feelings of despair, pain, or hopeless is not a sign that God has forsaken you and don’t be discouraged. God is always there. “For whom the Lord loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.” Proverbs 3:12 “As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him.” Psalm 103:13 “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18

We can have hope even in the dark. In the mist of your darkness you can say “For You will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness.” Psalm 18:28 Even when you cannot see evidence of God working in your life you can trust God to create a better life for you. Look above the clouds and beyond the darkness to the God who hovered over the face of the deep and can make light in the darkness and remember that God can still bring light out of any darkness in your life today. When you are discouraged or afraid allow God to be your light in the night.
