Jehovah Jireh

Jehovah Jireh

God is a great God. He has promised to provide all of our needs, including the ability to be forgiven. That is why Abraham called him Jehovah Jireh, because Jehovah Jireh means God the provider.

God had come to Abraham with a very strange command. God told Abraham to take His only son, whom he loved, and offer him as a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Abraham obeyed God’s command and took his son Isaac into the mountains. Abraham laid the wood for the fire on Isaac’s back, while he took the knife and the fire in his hands.

As they walked along Isaac said to his father, “We have the wood, the fire, and the knife, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham trusted in God’s provisions and told Isaac that God would provide himself a lamb for the burnt offering. When they arrived at the site Abraham gathered some stones and built an altar. Then he took the wood and piled it on the altar. He then laid Isaac on top of the wood.

Abraham lifted up the knife to slay his son. Just at that moment the Angel of the Lord called out from heaven saying, “Abraham, Abraham lay not your hand upon the lad, for now I know that you respect God seeing that you have not withheld your only son from Me.”

Abraham looked behind and saw a ram caught in a thicket of bushes. Abraham took the ram and used it for the sacrifice. Then Abraham called the place Jehovah Jireh because God provided himself a sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

This represents the love of God as manifested when He gave us the Messiah, His only son, as the sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins. Truly we can call God Jehovah Jireh.
