The Creature with Blue Blood and Many Hearts

It is normal to have one heart and because having one heart is pretty common in most varieties of animals, we might not even stop to consider the possibility that not everything has one heart.

But just as some creatures have multiple limbs and eyes some can also have more than one heart. And there is a creature that lives in the water that has more than one heart although it is probably better known for multiple limbs than for multiple hearts. The octopus has not one or two, but three hearts (Bradford, Alina 2017).

Two of these hearts push blood to the gills that provided oxygen for the octopus to breath and the other one sends blood to the rest of the octopus’s body. But the hearts are not the only thing that are interesting about the octopus’s circulatory system. The blood of the octopus is blue. This is because the principal content of octopus blood is hemocyanin which has made with copper rather than iron like as hemoglobin which is the common component of blood that gives the classic red color we most often associate blood with (Strauss, Bob 2017).

Research has found that the blue blood does serve a very important purpose for the octopus. The copper-based hemocyanin makes it easier for the octopus’s tissues remain oxygenated in subzero temperatures where other animals would have a more challenging time supplying the body with oxygen. When comparing the Antarctic octopus which the highest haemocyanin levels to others at the same temperature of 50 degrees research found it released 76.7% oxygen. This is far more than the than the two other types of octopus compared. The octopus pallidus released 33% oxygen and eledone moschata octopus 29.8%. This study showed that haemocyanin makes the octopus more effective at supplying the body with oxygen (Hall, Shannon 2015).

This unique creature is well suited for its environment which can be in many places due to the wisdom of God. Although you may not have two hearts you can get different one and replace the one you have right now with one that is much better. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit inside you; I will take the stony heart out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit inside you and cause you to live by my laws, respect my rulings and obey them.” Ezekiel 36:26-27. Accepting the blood atonement provided by Yeshua for a new heart infused with God’s spirit will make you more suited for the holy environment of Heaven which is the only environment we should be suited for.
